Djokovic, Nadal to clash again in the 2012 Rome Final – Youtube Highlights

Yes… it is Djokovic – Nadal again.

This is going to be their 9th final in 14 months (7-1 to Nole).

Overall Head to head: Nadal leads 17-14 (10-2 on Clay).

DJOKOVIC – FEDERER 6-2 7-6 (4)

Great match and statement from the Serb that won in 1h and 39m. Djokovic was in complete control of the first set to break Roger in the 3rd and 7th game without conceding a break point. Federer committed a whopping 19 unforced error in the opening set and his 1 serve percentage was only 39% (you can’t do that with Novak).

The second set was more even with Nole breaking Federer at the 7th game to lead 4-3. Than the Serb was unable to close the match when he was serving on a 5-4 scoreline. The match went to the tiebreak with most of the crowd backing the Swiss. But Novak diplayed once again a very solid tennis to grab a 3-0 lead to give to the Serb a decisive edge to win the tiebreak 7-4.

“I am really satisfied I am in another final, I made another great win against a great player in Roger Federer,” Djokovic said. “I will try to win another trophy and he will too. We have a great rivalry, he is the player I have played most in my career. It’s going to be a tough fight but definitely it would help for both of us to get this trophy before going to Paris.”

NADAL – FERRER 7-6 (6) 6-0

Another wonderful match between the two Spaniards. Ferrer is chasing a win with Rafa from long time on the clay (Rafa won 12 consecutive matches on this surface with him). He knows he can make it, but Rafa always managed to go for the extra mile (as he does with everybody).

David had a remarkable head start with great tennis. In particular, he was able to neutralize Rafa’s forehand by finding his backhand as much as he could (maybe the only strategy you can have to defeat Rafa on the red dirt). The King of Clay was very good in keeping his cool to weather the (David’s) storm and stay as close as he could to his fellow countryman. Eventually Rafa managed to win the opener in a very tight tiebreak (8-6).

Then David melted down to lose the next set at 0.

“At the start of the match, David was playing unbelievably,” Nadal said afterwards. “My thought was that the best news for me would probably to be level at 3-3. After the first six, seven games then it was more equal because before that he was playing better than me.”

“I was very happy with how I was mentally, because I stayed focused all the time. In the second set I started a little bit better and he was a little tired, which is normal after such a difficult first set.”
