Simona Halep had a very tricky task in Miami. In her opening match. the Romanian had on her way the upcoming Naomi Osaka from Japan that is capable of everything with her incredible firepower.
After exchanging the first two sets, Simona and Naomi had to battle in a very tense decider. The Romanian got a critical break in the 3rd game (2-1), but then she surrendered her own serve in the 6th game (3-3). The Japanese didn’t manage to keep the momentum, and then the Halep won 8 of the following 9 points to grab a decisive 5-3 lead. Naomi wasn’t able to hold her last serve, and finally Simona won the contest 6-4 2-6 6-4.

Simona is recovering from a knee injury that has prevented her from getting significant results at the beginning of the season. The Romanian commented
“It’s really important that I could win this match today. I think it was very, very difficult to play against her in the first match here at the tournament, but I’m really happy. I had no pain, I stayed there two hours, fighting, running all over the place; so it’s great.”
Next vs. Kontaveit
Simona will face the rising star Anett Kontaveit in the 3rd round. They have never played each other so far.
