Wawrinka wins dogfight against Thiem

Stan Wawrinka reaches the Indian Wells semi-final for the first time in his career after beating Dominic Thiem in the quarters.

The match started in a funny way with both players dropping their serve immediately. Eventually, it was Stan to win the opener 6-4 after blasting an amazing passing shot. Thiem conquered the second set 6-4, but he seemed to be doomed after he was trailing on a 0-3 score line in the decider. The Austrian managed to break back in the 5th game, and the third set went to the tie-break.  After splitting the first 4 points (2-2), Stan was much sharper than his opponent to clinch the following 5 points and win the match 6-4 4-6 7-6 (2) after 2 hours and 31 minutes.

It was a high-level match. WAWRINKA

Stan was extremely pleased with both the result and his tennis to comment

“The level was really high tonight. I’m really happy with the way I was playing, the way I found a way to win it. He’s a strong player, really tough to play. I think in general we both played at a high level, and the match came down to only one or two points. In the third-set tie-break, I served really well. I was really focused on not giving him anything.”

The semi vs. Carreno Busta

Stan will play Pablo Carreno-Busta in the semi-final. The head to head is 2-0 for the Swiss, but they have never played each other on hard courts.
