The Cincinnati Open, one of the oldest tennis tournaments in the United States, began in 1899. Originally played on clay courts at the Avondale Athletic Club, the event has undergone numerous transformations in venue, surface, and format. It was renamed the Tri-State Tennis Tournament in 1901 and held at various locations before settling in Mason, Ohio, in 1979. That move also marked the switch to hard courts, aligning the tournament with the modern era of professional tennis.

Growth into a Premier Event

Over the decades, the Cincinnati Open grew in stature, becoming part of the ATP Masters 1000 and WTA 1000 series. It now attracts the world’s top players and serves as a key warm-up for the US Open. The tournament boasts four stadium courts and has become a fan favorite for its intimate setting and high-quality matches. In recent years, it expanded to a 12-day format with a 96-player draw, joining the ranks of other elite events like Indian Wells and Miami.
