Four Colchester padel fans are getting ready to try the world record for the longest padel marathon. On Saturday, August 15, at 5 a.m., Craig Maiden, Ben Lampon, Joe Heron, and Luke Finn will start their battle at the David Lloyd courts in Colchester. They aim to beat the existing record, which was set in London in September 2023 and stands at 31 hours, 38 minutes, and 50 seconds.
The same four players must play the whole game without any notable stops or breaks that would unnecessarily prolong it in order to qualify. Continuous play in compliance with official padel standards is required by the rules.
Preparation and training
Since last September, the group has been working out every Monday to improve their coordination and endurance. The inspiration for their application to Guinness World Records came from an Instagram post on the record. After their application was approved, preparations have gotten more intense in the last few weeks.
“We got the bug for it and we’ve been playing ever since,” Ben Lampon stated. We’ll have to pass away before we leave the court because we’re really egotistical people. Knowing that the mental task will be as difficult as the physical one, the squad is focused and determined.
Endorsing worthwhile causes
In addition to the record attempt, the event will generate money for four charities selected by each participant: Breast Cancer Research, Parkinson’s UK, Great Ormond Street Hospital, and St Helena Hospice. They are already collecting money online to reach their £4,000 fundraising goal.
It’s fantastic to raise money for these charity, and we can’t wait for it to begin,” Craig Maiden continued. Motivating one another through the night will be the most difficult aspect, but by Saturday morning, we will know we’ve succeeded.
An entertainment-filled community gathering
Supporters do not have to be David Lloyd members to participate in the marathon; it will be accessible to everybody. To create a joyous atmosphere for those supporting them, there will be raffles, a BBQ, and DJs in addition to the padel match.
The competition seems to be a special fusion of endurance, sport, and camaraderie. The four athletes are expected to motivate others with their commitment and perseverance, regardless of whether they break the record.
