Holger Rune recently shared his experience training with Andre Agassi during a brief three-day session in Washington. Speaking to Tennis Channel at the Canadian Open in Toronto, Rune described Agassi’s approach to the game as unlike anything he had encountered before. He was struck by how Agassi simplified complex aspects of tennis, making the sport feel more intuitive and strategic.

Learning from a Legend

Rune emphasized how valuable it was to receive direct feedback from an eight-time Grand Slam champion. Although he didn’t grow up watching Agassi play, Rune had studied his techniques through online clips, particularly admiring how Agassi took the ball early and controlled rallies. The training sessions focused on tactical adjustments and mental clarity, which Rune found both refreshing and insightful.

Rune said:

“Some of the advice he gave me was very helpful. To share those three days, for him to get a look at my game, it was just amazing. My coach Lars (Christensen) appreciated it too, they talked a little bit and we’re still in touch.

I’ve watched so many YouTube clips with him on how he was taking the ball early. It was so clear to see how he was making life easy for himself on the court … it was a bit before my time so I didn’t grow up watching Andre. But to look back at how tennis was then was really interesting to see.”

Not a Full-Time Partnership

While the collaboration sparked speculation about a coaching arrangement, Rune clarified that Agassi is not joining his team permanently. The two remain in contact, and Rune’s coach Lars Christensen also appreciated the exchange of ideas. The short training block was more of a mentorship opportunity, offering Rune a new lens through which to view his game.

Building Momentum in Toronto

Rune’s time with Agassi coincided with a strong performance at the National Bank Open, where he defeated Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard and advanced to face Alexandre Muller. As he prepares for the US Open, Rune hopes to apply the lessons learned from Agassi to elevate his game and compete more consistently at the highest level.
