A big debate is going around during the last few days if it is right to grant a wildcard to Maria Sharapova after she was banned for more than one year for doping.
Andy Murray has been extremely vocal about the fact that it is not right giving a wild card to Maria Sharapova because now she really needs to work her way back. His view is shared by others.
I am against cheaters. KYRGIOS
During a recent interview in New York, Nick Kyrgios commented
“I’m anti-anything that’s performance-enhancing, massively against it. I’m not the one to say what violators should or shouldn’t get afterward, but it doesn’t make sense to support people who cheat.”
Roddick
Andy Roddick expressed a more balanced view about the same argument to state
“It’s two different issues: the issue of morality and how you view it, and the issue of business. If there’s a smaller event that will benefit from having Maria, I don’t begrudge them giving her the card. The Grand Slams are different. They’re held to a higher standard because there’s so much interest in them.”
It is going to be interesting what the Roland Garros is going to do about it. What about making Maria playing the qualifications? She should manage to get through it…
