Three covered padel courts at Powerleague’s Portobello location in Edinburgh are now under construction. An important change in the city’s recreational environment is represented by the renovation of one of the current five-a-side football fields.

Council Acceptance and Site Specifics

On December 30, the council’s planning department approved the request that was filed the previous year. The 0.1-hectare field that is undergoing conversion is situated in the complex’s northeast corner. Padel courts will be constructed inside the current football field’s footprint, with each court measuring 10 by 20 meters and separated by two meters.

Characteristics of the New Courts

The courts will have mesh fencing and glass glazing panels enclosing synthetic carpet surfaces. Floodlights above them will guarantee visibility while playing in the evening. Each court will be covered by a canopy of translucent opal cloth, enabling year-round use in all weather.

Feedback and Impact on the Community

Powerleague stressed that the refurbishment offers locals a new alternative rather than reducing the availability of sports fields. The project’s supporters commended its ability to broaden local sports offers and enhance health and well-being. Concerns regarding the visual impact and decreased daylight for surrounding residences were among the issues voiced.

Future Plans and Investments

This move is a component of Powerleague’s £7 million padel tennis investment in the UK. The Portobello courts are expected to open in August 2025, joining a growing network of over 800 padel courts across the UK, with hundreds more in planning or construction.
