Bad news from Serena Williams as the American legend had to withdraw from Cincinnati because of her back injury a few days after she retired in the final in Toronto.
The 23-time slam champion looked in good condition during her warm-up training in Cincinnati, but eventually she had to concede the 1st round to Zarina Diyas.
Serena’s communicate about her injury
The former world no.1 commented:
“I am so sad to withdraw as it is truly one of the tournaments I most love to play. I came to Mason on Sunday and have tried everything to be ready to play tonight, and was still hopeful after my practice this morning. But unfortunately, my back is still not right.”
Will Serena play the US Open?
This retirement came a bit as a surprise as Serena said that usually, it takes maximum 36 hours for her to recover from her back spams. In addition, the American legend looked in good form during her morning practice. This will definitely cast some doubts about her participation in the US Open that will start in a couple of weeks.
Serena is the runner-up at the Flushing Meadows after the famous final that she lost to Naomi Osaka last year. The tennis community is also adamant about seeing the American to win another slam and make it even with Margaret Court that won 24 majors.
