The USTA has unveiled a fresh wave of entries for the 2025 US Open Mixed Doubles Championship, and one pairing stands out for its surprise factor and nostalgic appeal: Venus Williams and Reilly Opelka. Williams, now 45, brings decades of experience and two Grand Slam mixed doubles titles from 1998. Opelka, known for his towering serve and outspoken views on doubles, adds intrigue to the duo. Despite their star power, they are currently listed last among the entries and may require a wild card to compete.
A Reimagined Championship Format
This year’s event has been restructured to take place during US Open Fan Week, on August 19 and 20, at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. With $1 million in prize money on the line, the format aims to attract top singles players and elevate mixed doubles to a marquee event. Matches will feature short sets, no-ad scoring, and a fast-paced structure designed for fan engagement.
Entry Criteria and Deadline
A total of 25 teams have entered so far. The top eight teams based on combined singles rankings will gain direct entry into the draw. The remaining eight spots will be filled via wild cards, which will be announced after the entry window closes on July 28 at 12:00 ET. Notably, Jack Draper and Qinwen Zheng—previously announced—are absent from the list, likely due to Zheng’s recent surgery.
Big Names and Bold Pairings
The entry list reads like a who’s who of tennis royalty. Pairings include Emma Raducanu and Carlos Alcaraz, Iga Swiatek and Casper Ruud, Naomi Osaka and Nick Kyrgios, and Olga Danilovic with Novak Djokovic. Other standout duos feature Elena Rybakina and Taylor Fritz, Aryna Sabalenka and Grigor Dimitrov, and Madison Keys with Frances Tiafoe. The mix of established champions and rising stars promises high drama and compelling matchups.
Anticipation Builds Ahead of Fan Week
With the entry deadline approaching and wild cards still to be announced, fans are eagerly awaiting confirmation of the final draw. The inclusion of Venus Williams and Reilly Opelka adds a layer of nostalgia and unpredictability to an already electric field. Whether they make the cut or not, their entry has already sparked conversation and excitement around the revamped championship.
