Alexandr Dolgopolov looked a bit lost in the rankings in the last few years. The entertaining Ukrainian wasn’t able to win a title since 2012, and his tennis wasn’t as sharp as he was meant to be; finally, he found his way in Buenos Aires after he won the title against Kei Nishikori.
Dolgopolov has impressed for the entire week as he defeated tough players (and clay court specialists) such as Tipsarevic, Cuevas, and Carreno Busta in straight sets. The icing on the cake was obviously beating world no.5 Kei Nishikori in the final 7-6 (4) 6-4. Alexandr had a horrible 0-5 win-loss record against the Japanese, and he has never managed to win a single set against him.

After the match, Alexandr commented
“I think you can call it a perfect week. I didn’t lose a set and beat Kei for the first time. The fans were really supporting me, and I felt very welcome here.”
This is Dolgopolov’s 3rd career title after Washington 2012 and Umag 2011.
Both Nishikori and Dolgopolov will now head to Rio to compete in the ATP500.
