Holger Rune’s disappointing first-round exit at Wimbledon has taken an unexpected turn off the court. The Danish tennis star, who was seeded eighth, suffered a five-set defeat to Chile’s Nicolas Jarry, losing 4-6, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3, 6-4. While the loss itself was a blow, it’s what followed that has stirred up even more attention.
Broken Rackets Appear on Rune’s Online Store
Shortly after the match, two of Rune’s broken rackets were listed for sale on his official website, Shop Holger Rune. The rackets, clearly damaged and unusable, were priced at an eye-watering $7,231 (£5,291) each. The listings raised eyebrows among fans and industry insiders alike, with many questioning the rationale behind selling broken equipment at such a premium.
Sponsor Babolat Responds with Disapproval
The listings did not go unnoticed by Rune’s equipment sponsor, Babolat. By Tuesday morning, the rackets had been removed from the site, leaving only match outfits and other merchandise available for purchase. Babolat’s chief, Marion Cornu, expressed clear disapproval of the move.
“It’s not our intention to promote broken rackets,” Cornu told CLAY and RG Media during Babolat’s 150th anniversary celebrations. She emphasized that the company is currently in discussions with Rune’s agent to address the situation and ensure alignment with the brand’s values.
Brand Image and Athlete Responsibility
This incident highlights the delicate balance athletes must maintain between personal branding and sponsor expectations. While unique memorabilia can sometimes attract collectors, the decision to market broken gear—especially so soon after a high-profile loss—can send mixed signals. For sponsors like Babolat, consistency in messaging and brand integrity remains paramount.
