Bianca Andreescu has been hitting the headlines this year after her meteoric rise. Even if the young Canadian has just turned 19, she is already playing like a veteran and won one of the most prestigious titles on tour: Indian Wells.
Bianca is one of those players that makes you switch on the Tv when she competes as her game is extremely watchable with her variation and she has a fantastic “never-give-up” attitude.
However, this die-hard attitude sometimes is costly. Andreescu played a lot of tennis in the first part of the year, and unfortunately she had to cope with a tricky injury to her shoulder. Because of her character, the teenager tends to show her emotions when injured, and her opponents may not like this behaviour.
The “Drama Queen” controversy
Angelique Kerber went a bit too overboard when she insulted Andreescu at the net in the 3rd round Miami this year after she lost a 3-setter to call Bianca a “drama queen.”
The German ceded to her nerves also because Andreescu beat her 1 week before in the prestigious Indian Wells final, but that is not an excuse to be so aggressive against a young colleague.
Bianca is not a “Drama Queen, but…”
Andreescu is having a fantastic partnership with her coach Sylvain Bruneau that during an interview with Radio Canada revealed how Bianca should behave when injured. Talking about the “Drama Queen” saga, Sylvain commented:
“I have a lot of respect for Kerber, and I’m sure she said that under the influence of emotion. Should this kind of thing be said like that? Ideally not, but I can understand Kerber’s reaction.
Bianca had real pain in her shoulder, to the point where she had to give up the next match. But against Kerber, did she need to make those movements before serving or returning to show that she was in pain? I do not think there is a benefit to doing that.”
We are sure that after playing more matches Bianca will have a more “Nadal-like” approach during her matches using Rafa’s famous “poker face.”
