Injured Monfils explains why he could not compete against Nadal in Montreal

Monfils on why he couldn't play Nadal in the Montreal semifinal

Monfils injured

Gael Monfils had a fantastic week in Montreal where he reached the semifinal. Unfortunately, the Frenchman is notoriously prone to injuries and eventually he had to concede the final to Rafael Nadal after he got hurt in the quarters when playing Roberto Bautista Agut even if he won 6-4 3-6 7-6.

About his ankle injury

After the match against the Spaniard, Gael commented:

“It’s the first tournament since my comeback, and I have to take into account I was going to play against Rafa. Against Rafa you have to be 100 percent, it’s always difficult that way. If you’re not 100 percent physically, and I’m not because I’m injured, and because I played two and a half hours ago, so it becomes difficult.”

Will Monfils play in Cincinnati and at the US Open?

It’s still not clear if Gael will try to compete in Ohio. This would put a lot of pressure on his ankle and similarly to Simona Halep he would be better to rest for a couple of weeks to get ready for the US Open. Monfils has no points to defend in Cincinnati as he didn’t compete last year.
