Arnaud Gabas, the umpire hit by Denis Shapovalov during a recent Davis Cup tie, had a successful operation to his eye socket. After being hit, the umpire went immediately to the Ottawa General Hospital to check on the retina (that, fortunately, wasn’t damaged). Back to France, Arnaud had an x-ray that disclosed a fracture to his orbital bone under his left eye. Therefore, Arnaud had the operation, and he is now in “good spirit.”

After the operation, Arnaud released the following comment
“I would like to thank my doctors for their excellent support. The surgery was successful, and I am now concentrating on rest and rehabilitation so I can be back on court in the near future. I would also like to express my sincere gratitude for all the messages of support I have received from around the world.’’
That’s good news. Let’s hope that Denis (and other players) will learn from this. Shapovalov was fined only $7,000 for this.
