Emma Navarro brought a dose of humor and honesty to Wimbledon 2025 as she opened up about her unexpected mixed doubles partnership with World No. 1 Jannik Sinner. The American star, currently ranked inside the top 10, revealed that the duo had never spoken before being paired together for the upcoming US Open mixed doubles event.
“It’s actually kind of hilarious,” Navarro said with a grin after her first-round win. “We met for the first time just a few days ago. He came up to me and said, ‘I’ve heard about your volleys—please play with me!’ I told him, ‘You’re not the best doubles player, but I’ll make an exception.’”
Sinner, who also addressed the media during his pre-Wimbledon press conference, echoed the lighthearted tone. “We never talked, never texted. The tournament kind of matched us up because most teams were already set,” he explained. “I told her not to get mad at my volleys—I struggle in doubles!”
The pairing is part of a new mixed doubles showcase at the US Open, scheduled for August 19–20, featuring top singles players in a standalone event with a $1 million prize pool. Despite their lack of history, both Navarro and Sinner expressed excitement about the opportunity to team up and entertain fans in a fresh format.
Navarro, who previously won the Eisenhower Cup with Ben Shelton, is no stranger to mixed doubles success. “I think it’s going to be fun,” she said. “I’ve got to hold up my end of the bargain, but I’m excited to see what we can do together.”
With both players off to strong starts at Wimbledon, their budding partnership is already generating buzz—and a few laughs—before they even hit the court together.
