Zverev wins his 2nd career title in Montpellier

Alexander Zverev is getting better and better. The 19-year-old from Germany won his second career title in Montpellier after he defeated Richard Gasquet 7-6 (4) 6-3. Richard was Zverev’s third consecutive French player that the German beat in Montpellier after Chardy and Tsonga.

The final

Sascha started the match against Gasquet in great fashion after he broke Richard in the very first game to then grab a 2-0 lead. But Gasquet was in no mood to give up the final to break back soon after and bring the opener to the tiebreak. Eventually, Zverev found the solution to win the breaker at 4. The second set was also extremely even with Gasquet giving up his service only in the 8th game (3-5). Eventually, Alexander held the last game to win the contest after 1 hour and 28 minutes.

It was a very tough tournament

Sascha was also elated with the fact that he won doubles with his brother Mischa after beating Martin and Nestor 6-4 6-7 (3) 10-7. The German commented

“I’m very happy to win my first title of the year. Obviously, it was a very tough tournament, only one straight-sets match in the whole tournament, today, and it was not an easy one. I think it was a high-level match and I’m happy to get the win.

It’s great to win singles and doubles. I’m very happy the way we played. We only dropped one set in the tournament. I think it was a very successful tournament for the Zverevs.”

Sascha will now go to Rotterdam where he will play his friend Dominic Thiem in the first round.
