Dimitrov triumphs in Sofia

Finally, Grigor Dimitrov!

The Bulgarian is having a breakthrough year after a fantastic start of the season. In 2017, Grigor has already won 2 titles (Brisbane and now Sofia), and he is enjoying a fantastic 14-1 win-loss record.

Dimitrov won a very emotional title in Sofia after he defeated Goffin in straight sets in the final. Grigor was already enjoying a 2-0 head to head record against Goffin, and he dismantled the Belgian just two weeks ago in the Australian Open quarter-finals.

The final

After grabbing a fast 3-0 lead, Dimitrov had to concede a service game in the 5th game (3-2) to then conquer the decisive break only in the 12th game. After winning the first set, Grigor was on a fly in the second set to clinch a 5-0 lead. When everything looked set for an easy triumph for the Bulgarian, things started to go south. Goffin saved three match points, and he won 4 consecutive games to reach a 4-5 scoreline. The “old” Dimitrov could have folded, but instead, he kept his focus to break Goffin again and win the match 7-5 6-4 in 1 hour and 38 minutes.

The most prestigious title of my career. DIMITROV

Grigor was visibly emotional after winning the title on the home soil to comment

“This is my most prestigious title for sure, winning it at home is a tremendous success for me. I will treasure this title for the rest of my life; it’s something amazing for me.”

Grigor will now head to Rotterdam where he will play the ATP500.
