Lorenzo Musetti reflects on first-round Wimbledon exit and physical struggles

Lorenzo Musetti

Lorenzo Musetti’s Wimbledon campaign came to an abrupt halt in the first round following a hard-fought loss to Nikoloz Basilashvili. Speaking candidly after the match, the Italian acknowledged both the challenges he faced entering the tournament and the credit due to his opponent.

“I wasn’t as well prepared as I would’ve liked because of my injury,” Musetti admitted. “I’ll take some time in the coming weeks to assess what to do next.”

The match itself saw flashes of Musetti’s trademark flair, but physical limitations clearly hampered his ability to sustain momentum. Particularly after dropping a tight third set, he acknowledged that regaining energy or turning things around felt unlikely in his current condition.

Despite the disappointment, the 22-year-old was gracious in defeat. “I don’t want to take anything away from Nico,” he added. “He’s a good person and he deserved the win.”

The loss serves as a moment for reflection in what has been a season of highs and lows for Musetti. With recovery now taking precedence, attention turns to his next steps—ones that will be shaped as much by his health as by his hunger to return to top form.
