Jannik Sinner began his Wimbledon campaign with a measured and composed performance, easing past fellow Italian Luca Nardi in a match where serving strength made the critical difference. Following a focused training block after Halle, Sinner entered the grass-court Major with renewed emphasis on his delivery—and it showed.

“Today especially in the important moments I felt like I was serving very well,” Sinner noted after the win, his confidence reflecting the work put in during the short window between tournaments. Early on, both players struggled to find rhythm, with few rallies offering much flow. But Sinner gradually found his stride, stepping inside the baseline and striking through the ball with increasing clarity.

Though Nardi offered resistance, it was Sinner’s poise in pressure moments that marked the gap in experience. He repeatedly landed clutch first serves when he needed them most, setting up easy points and protecting his lead with precision. His movement remained sharp, and while the match had its moments of scrappiness, the world No. 1 always appeared in control.

This is what he said: “We worked a lot after Halle on the serve. Today especially in the important moments I felt like I was serving very well. In the beginning I think we both struggled a bit. Not so many rallies. I tried to step up. Trying to hit through the ball. Very happy with how I ended the match. Hopefully that gives me confidence to start the next match. First matches are never easy. I’m very happy about my performance and also the serving.”

Sinner acknowledged the challenge of opening-round nerves, admitting that “first matches are never easy,” but also spoke of satisfaction in how he finished the encounter. With his serve clicking and momentum building, he heads into the second round buoyed by both the win and the growth it reflects.

For a player whose reputation has often leaned heavily on baseline consistency and mental fortitude, the sharp edge added to his serve could be the upgrade that takes him even deeper into the Wimbledon draw.
