Holger Rune’s Wimbledon campaign came to an abrupt end in the first round after a dramatic five-set loss to Chilean qualifier Nicolás Jarry. Despite taking a commanding two-set lead, Rune was unable to close out the match, eventually falling 4–6, 4–6, 7–5, 6–3, 6–4 in a contest that lasted over three and a half hours.

The Danish world No. 8 looked in control early on, dictating play with his aggressive baseline game. But as the match wore on, Rune’s movement became visibly hampered, and he called for medical treatment on his knee during the fourth set. Jarry, ranked 143rd in the world, capitalized on the shift in momentum, firing 31 aces and maintaining composure to complete a stunning comeback.

Speaking after the match, Rune didn’t shy away from expressing his frustration. “In normal conditions, I’d beat him nine times out of ten, with all due respect to Nicolás Jarry,” he said. “Obviously, I didn’t have it easy today with my knee, but yes, it wasn’t a great match.”

Rune’s comments reflect both his disappointment and the physical challenges he faced during the match. The knee issue, which has troubled him in the past, appeared to resurface at a critical moment, limiting his ability to serve and strike his backhand with full power.

The loss marks another early exit at a major for Rune, who had reached the second week at both the Australian Open and Roland-Garros earlier this year. As he now turns his attention to recovery, questions remain about his fitness heading into the North American hard-court swing.
