Wimbledon features two courts equipped with retractable roofs, designed to ensure play continues in the face of unpredictable British weather.
The iconic Centre Court was the first to receive this upgrade, with its roof completed in time for the 2009 Championships. This innovation allowed for uninterrupted play, even during the famously frequent London rain.
A decade later, No. 1 Court followed suit, unveiling its own roof in 2019. The addition was part of a larger renovation effort to modernize the venue and enhance the spectator experience.
Both courts are now equipped with advanced climate control and lighting systems, enabling play to extend into the evening and offering greater scheduling flexibility for players and officials alike.
While the rest of the grounds, including Courts No. 2 and 3 and the outer courts, remain open to the elements, Centre and No. 1 Court serve as crucial stages for maintaining continuity when the weather doesn’t cooperate—preserving both the drama and rhythm of The Championships.
