Sofia Kenin is one of the most celebrated names in professional tennis. The 20-year-old is Russian-American by origin. She achieved a career-high WTA ranking of 27 and has won two WTA singles titles. She is currently ranked 29th.

Kenin was born 14th November 1998 in Russia’s Moscow to parents Svetlana and Alexander Kenin. Her family migrated to the United States, a few months after her birth. However, they returned back again to Russia to help raise her well. Her mother worked as a nurse and the family had little money when they initially moved to the US.
At the age of five years, Sofia started playing tennis and her sole source of inspiration was her dad Alexander, who she had seen playing tennis as a recreation. Her parents were quick enough to recognize that little Sofia has the potential to become a quality tennis player. They arranged training sessions for her with Rick Macci, the veteran coach in Florida’s Broward County.
Rick coached Kenin until she was twelve and a few years back had shared a story about the Tennis star saying: “Back then [when Kenin was five], I came right out and said Sofia was the scariest little creature I’d ever seen. It was unique: the hand-eye coordination and her ability to take the ball immediately right after the bounce.
He further added: “I have a lot of kids do that, but it was almost like it was baked in already, even though she was little and the racket was actually bigger than her. The only player I’ve seen like that is [former world No.1] Martina Hingis”.
She became the top-ranked player in Florida for the USTA 10-and-under tournaments division with her prowess. Kenin had by the age of fourteen, successfully won the USTA International Grade 1 Spring championships and after winning the USTA Girls 18s National Championship, she debuted for the Grand Slam in the US Open of 2015.
In the recent 2019 Fed Cup, she emerged victorious in the decisive match of Switzerland versus the USA and played a crucial role in sending the US team into the World Group.
