LIVE RANKINGS. Naomi Osaka 1 win from world no.1, but…

Naomi can get back to the top of the rankings. See how.

Naomi Osaka

Naomi Osaka is about to start her run in Toronto where she will face the world no.74 Tajana Maria. Even if this is “just” a first-round, Naomi has the great opportunity to overtake in the rankings the world no.1, Ashleigh Barty, if she wins.

The world no.1 battle

In the live rankings, Ashleigh Barty has just 6256 points, and she can’t add any point this week since she is already out from Toronto after she lost in the opener to Sofia Kenin. Naomi Osaka has 6228 “live points,” and if she beats Maria in her 1st round, she will have 6287 points to be the new leader in the live rankings.

However, overtaking Ashleigh in the rankings may not be enough for Naomi to be no.1 at the beginning of next week. In fact, Karolina Pliskova is still in the mix, and she will top the WTA rankings if she conquers the title in Toronto.

Therefore, the only way for Naomi to be sure of being the new world no.1 from next Monday is winning the Rogers Cup.

Alternatively, Naomi can stay no.1 if she reaches the final and Pliskova doesn’t win the tournament or if she gets to the semifinal and PLiskova is not the tournament runner-up.

If Naomi wins the next match, the Czech has no chances to regain the world no.1 rank if she doesn’t reach at least the semifinal.

Besides all these projections, the 1st step for Naomi will be to overcome Maria and then try to get as deep as she can in the tournament.
