THE NEW RULES! US Open introduces star-studded mixed doubles format to captivate fans

Alcaraz

The US Open is shaking up tradition with a bold reimagining of its mixed doubles competition, aiming to draw global attention and elevate the event’s profile. This year’s edition will feature a condensed 16-team draw, a fast-paced scoring system, and a lineup of marquee names that reads like a Grand Slam singles final.

Among the headline pairings are Carlos Alcaraz and Emma Raducanu, Naomi Osaka and Nick Kyrgios, Iga Swiatek and Casper Ruud, and Novak Djokovic alongside Olga Danilovic. These duos, composed of top-ranked singles players, mark a dramatic shift from the usual roster of doubles specialists.

The format itself has been redesigned for speed and spectacle. Matches will be played in short sets—first to four games with no-ad scoring and a 10-point match tiebreak in place of a third set. The competition will unfold during Fan Week on August 19–20, just before the main singles draw begins, giving fans an early taste of elite-level tennis.

With a $1 million prize pool—five times last year’s amount—the stakes are higher than ever. Eight teams will qualify based on combined singles rankings, while the remaining eight will receive wild cards from the USTA.

While some traditionalists have voiced concerns about the exclusion of doubles specialists, the new format has already generated buzz for its entertainment value and potential to showcase tennis as a truly co-ed sport. The event promises to blend athletic excellence with star power, offering a fresh and dynamic experience for fans and players alike.
