The Women’s Tennis Association has officially announced the return of the WTA 250 Chennai Open, set to take place from October 27, 2025. This marks a significant moment for Indian tennis, as the event returns to the SDAT Tennis Stadium in Nungambakkam after a three-year absence.
The tournament will feature a 32-player singles draw and a 16-team doubles draw, played on outdoor hard courts. It is the highest-level international women’s tennis event scheduled in India this year, drawing attention from both fans and players worldwide.
Chennai last hosted the event in 2022, when Czech teenager Linda Fruhvirtová captured the singles title. The return of the tournament has been made possible through the efforts of the Tamil Nadu Tennis Association and strong backing from the Government of Tamil Nadu and the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu.
Organizers are optimistic that the event will reignite local enthusiasm for tennis and provide a platform for emerging talent. With global broadcast coverage and a prize pool of approximately $250,000, the Chennai Open is poised to be a highlight of the late-season WTA calendar. The city’s warm hospitality and passionate fanbase are expected to make it a memorable stop for players on the tour.
