The Women’s Tennis Association has unveiled a groundbreaking policy that allows players to receive protected rankings while undergoing fertility protection procedures such as egg or embryo freezing. This initiative is part of the WTA’s broader commitment to supporting athletes in balancing their professional careers with family planning.

Under the new Special Eligibility Ranking Rule, players who take time away from competition for fertility treatments will be granted a protected ranking based on their 12-week average ranking before their absence. This ranking can be used to enter up to three tournaments upon their return, ensuring that athletes do not face setbacks in their careers due to family planning decisions.

The rule expands the WTA’s Family Focus Program, which already includes maternity leave benefits and grants for fertility protection through the PIF WTA Maternity Fund. The initiative has been championed by players who have advocated for greater support in navigating the challenges of professional sport and personal life.

WTA CEO Portia Archer emphasized the importance of empowering athletes to make informed choices about their futures without compromising their careers. Players such as Sloane Stephens have praised the policy, highlighting its significance in creating a safe space for female athletes to explore their options.

With this new measure, the WTA continues to lead in fostering an environment where players can thrive both on and off the court. The policy reflects a growing recognition of the unique challenges faced by female athletes and aims to provide meaningful solutions that support their long-term success.
