Serena Williams trashes Sharapova to get to the semis – 2012 WTA Madrid

Serena keeps her bid to get back to the very top positions of the WTA ranking.

The American had a fine match with Maria Sharapova taking advantage also of too many errors from the Russian.

The first set was an easy one with Serena in full control and Maria unable to cope. The Russian tried to stage a comeback in the second set to get to a 2-2 scoreline. Then Serena got back to business to wrap up the set and the match with an embarassing 6-1 6-3.

The American will play in the semis a Czech. Strange enough we are not talking about Kvitova, but we refer to Lucie Hradecka. The qualifier and world and nr.105 is really comfortable on the blue clay where she has already upset Petra Kvitova and now Sam Stosur in straight sets!

Both players had a very solid service game not to concede any break, so both sets were decided at the tiebreaks to give an unexpected win to the Czech 7-6 (8) 7-6 (6).

Serena is the favourite for the next match…but can Lucie produce another upset?
