Aryna Sabalenka shared her thoughts after falling to Coco Gauff in the French Open final, expressing her belief that if Iga Swiatek had defeated her in the semifinals, the Polish star would have gone on to win the title.
“If Iga had beaten me the other day, I think she’d come out today and get the win,” Sabalenka admitted, acknowledging Swiatek’s dominance on clay. The Belarusian had ended Swiatek’s 26-match winning streak at Roland Garros in a hard-fought semifinal, but she struggled to maintain her level in the final against Gauff.
Sabalenka, visibly emotional after the match, reflected on her performance. “It just hurts. I’ve been playing really well, and then in the last match, to go out there and do what I did, it hurts.”
Despite the disappointment, Sabalenka’s run at Roland Garros showcased her ability to challenge the best players on clay. As she looks ahead to the next tournaments, she will aim to regroup and continue her pursuit of another Grand Slam title.
