Novak Djokovic had nothing but admiration for Jannik Sinner after their intense semifinal clash at the French Open. The Serbian legend acknowledged Sinner’s dominance throughout the match, admitting that the world No. 1 was simply too strong on the day.
“He was just too good for me tonight,” Djokovic said. “Had some chances in the third set and the set point where I had a forehand and I missed it. That’s what these kinds of guys like Sinner and Alcaraz, particularly, present on the court. They put pressure. They’re constantly on you. They increase the pressure as the match progresses.”
Djokovic humorously referenced Sinner’s recent performances, saying, “It’s good not to get a bagel or a breadstick from Sinner here tonight. He’s been giving those quite a bit this tournament.” Despite the loss, he remained gracious, recognizing Sinner’s ability to dictate play and keep him under constant pressure.
The match was decided in straight sets, but Djokovic emphasized how close it was, especially in the second and third sets. “In terms of the level of tennis, I think it was three tight sets. Second and particularly third could’ve gone my way. One or two points. One or two shots. But he was the deserved winner.”
Djokovic also wished Sinner well for the final against Carlos Alcaraz, acknowledging the Italian’s rise to the top of the sport. “I wish him the best for the final. I think it’ll be an amazing matchup with Carlos. Two best players for sure at the moment.”
With Sinner now preparing for his first French Open final, Djokovic’s words reflect the deep respect he holds for his opponent and the exciting future of men’s tennis.
