Novak Djokovic revealed the tense situation he faced while returning to his hotel on the night Paris Saint-Germain won their first-ever Champions League title. The Serbian tennis star, who was competing at the French Open, described how the streets near his hotel, close to the Arc de Triomphe, were filled with celebrations that escalated into chaos.
Djokovic explained that his security team initially advised against returning to the hotel due to the unrest. “At one point, people were quite tense here for our return to the hotel. They were not suggesting we go back at all, maybe find a place to sleep somewhere around here for a night,” he said.
The streets were filled with PSG fans celebrating their historic 5-0 victory over Inter Milan, but the festivities took a dangerous turn. “There were some gas bombs and cars on fire, stuff happening on the street that was really dangerous,” Djokovic recalled.
Despite the uncertainty, Djokovic and his team eventually decided to make their way back. “In the end, we talked and waited for a bit. Then we decided to go, it was fine. We reached the hotel all good,” he said, though he noted that the noise and commotion outside continued well into the night.
Djokovic acknowledged the significance of PSG’s triumph and the emotions of the city. “It’s understandable that people are so excited. First-time Champions League winners for this city. It’s one of the most important cities in the world. They’re all celebrating. It’s going to be several days of celebration,” he said.
The night marked a historic moment for Paris, but also highlighted the intensity of the celebrations, which led to clashes with police and widespread disturbances across the city.
