Coco Gauff expressed her admiration for João Fonseca, highlighting his talent and the progress he has made in his career. She acknowledged that his journey to bridging the gap between himself and the top players would take time and experience but emphasized that his potential is undeniable.
Gauff noted that the physical aspect of the men’s game presents unique challenges, but she remains confident that Fonseca has the ability to develop and adapt. She praised his performances and expressed her excitement about his future, predicting that he will continue to grow and establish himself as a strong presence on the tour.
This is what she said: “A lot of it is just experience. Sometimes you may feel like a better player than them. But I think what makes the difference is they know what to do in those tough moments. Obviously with him he’s so talented and doing so great. It all will come with experience and time. Obviously guys is a bit different just physicality-wise.
The fact that at 18 he’s making 3rd round of Slams and doing the things he’s done, especially being on the male side of things where I think it’s a bit bigger of a physicality gap between 18 and 23 than on the women’s. I’m very excited to see where he’ll be in a few years. I guess just knowing that you want the results right now and you don’t realize how much you can improve in those years. I’m sure other people around him make him aware of that.”
As Fonseca gains more experience and refines his skills, his path toward competing at the highest level looks promising. With dedication and perseverance, he could become a formidable force in the sport in the coming years.
