Jasmine Paolini faced a crushing defeat at Roland Garros, falling to Elina Svitolina in a dramatic fourth-round match. The Italian, who had been riding a wave of momentum after winning the Italian Open, saw her hopes dashed as she failed to convert three match points in the second set.
Paolini started strong, taking the first set 6-4 and appearing in control of the match. She even held a break advantage in the second set, serving for victory at 5-3. However, Svitolina, known for her resilience, fought back, breaking Paolini’s serve and forcing a tiebreak. The Ukrainian saved multiple match points, including one in the tiebreak, before clinching the set.
The missed opportunities seemed to weigh heavily on Paolini, as she struggled to regain her composure in the deciding set. Svitolina capitalized on the shift in momentum, racing to a 4-0 lead before closing out the match 4-6, 7-6, 6-1.
After the match, Paolini admitted the loss was difficult to process but acknowledged Svitolina’s skill and determination. “It’s hard to accept, but I have to… she’s a great player,” she said, reflecting on the battle.
Paolini added: “I think the reason [I lost] is that she’s a great player. I had my chances.. maybe one match point I could play better, but at the same time, she’s a great player.”
Despite the disappointment, Paolini remains one of the most promising players on the tour. Her deep runs in major tournaments, including last year’s final at Roland Garros, demonstrate her ability to compete at the highest level. While this loss stings, she will undoubtedly use it as motivation for future challenges.
