Arthur Fils has officially withdrawn from the French Open after revealing that he has been struggling with a persistent back issue, which worsened during his second-round match against Jaume Munar. The young French star, who had battled through pain to secure a dramatic five-set victory, underwent medical exams that confirmed a stress fracture.
Faced with the reality of his condition, Fils and his team decided that stopping now would be the best course of action. He explained that resting immediately could limit his recovery time to four to six weeks, whereas continuing to play might have resulted in a much longer absence. Despite his determination to push through, he recognized that prioritizing his long-term health was the right choice.
This is what he said:
“To be quick, I had some issue with the back since a long time, and during the match against Munar it gets worse. Then I did some exams. The exams were not good at all. Got some stress fracture.
Yeah, whatever, we decide with the team it was better to stop now, because if I’m stopping now, I could stop for only four to six weeks. If I was pushing myself too much, I would probably stop for a couple of months.
This is not what we are trying to do, so yeah, had to make a choice.
Fils had thrilled the home crowd at Roland Garros with his resilience, but hi”s withdrawal means there are no French players left in the draw this year. While disappointing, his decision ensures that he can return to competition without risking further damage. Fans will now wait to see how he recovers and when he will make his comeback on the tour.
