Emma Raducanu faced a tough challenge at Roland Garros, falling to defending champion Iga Swiatek 6-1, 6-2 in the second round. The match highlighted the difference in level between the British player and one of the most dominant forces on clay.
After the loss, Raducanu acknowledged the work ahead, stating, “It just shows the distance that I have to improve.” Despite showing glimpses of her potential, she struggled to match Swiatek’s intensity and precision throughout the contest.
This is what she said: “I think Iga played really well today. Every time we’ve played, she plays really well. It kind of puts really a lot of pressure on from the beginning. It makes me feel like I have to maybe to do something extra.
I just don’t know what to do in the moment. I think it does shift the dynamics of the match a bit. Then it’s very difficult to kind of stay with her as she grows in confidence. It just shows I guess the distance that I have to improve.”
Swiatek, a four-time French Open champion, controlled the match from the start, using her aggressive baseline play to dictate the tempo. Raducanu had moments where she pushed back, but the Polish star’s consistency proved too much to overcome.
Looking ahead, Raducanu remains focused on her development, recognizing that competing against the best requires continuous refinement. Her journey on clay has shown progress, but she knows there is still a long way to go before she can challenge players of Swiatek’s caliber.
