Elena Rybakina has established herself as a formidable competitor on various court surfaces, adapting her game to thrive on clay, grass, and hard courts. The Kazakhstani player attributes her versatility to an aggressive playing style that allows her to dictate points regardless of the conditions.
While Rybakina acknowledges a preference for faster courts, she believes her serve remains an asset even on slower surfaces like clay. She emphasized that an attacking approach is crucial on all surfaces, enabling her to take control of rallies and finish points efficiently. On clay, she sees opportunities to come to the net more often while balancing patience with her natural aggression.
When asked why she plays well on all surfaces, this is what she said: “I think because I play aggressively. Of course I prefer a bit faster courts. But even here on clay, I think my serve can work well. Maybe not today, but it does give some advantage. Aggressive style of the game on clay is also something important. I can try to come to the net more. Try to finish the rally. But at the same time I need to stay more patient. But overall just the aggressive style. If I’m physically and moving well, it doesn’t matter which surface I play.”
Physical fitness and movement are key factors in her ability to perform consistently across different conditions. Rybakina expressed confidence that when she is in peak physical shape, the surface becomes less significant, allowing her to execute her game plan effectively.
Her adaptability was evident in her 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 victory over Julia Riera in the first round of the French Open. Despite facing challenges, she managed to secure the win and advance to the next round. As she continues to refine her approach, her ability to excel on all surfaces remains a defining strength in her career.
