Del Potro may skip the Australian Open for fitness concerns

Bad news from Juan Martin Del Potro.

The Argentine had a fantastic comeback in 2016 after he grabbed an unexpected silver medal in Rio, he won his first tournament in two years in Stockholm and, more important, he won the Davis Cup.

This feat doesn’t mean that Juan Martin is out of the woods with his fitness. Now ranked no. 38, Delpo doesn’t expect to improve his rankings in January as he has doubts about his fitness to probably skip the tournament in Auckland and, worse of all, the Australian Open.

Why I may miss the Australian Summer

During a recent interview, Juan Martin commented

“If I played these two tournaments, I lose time to practice. I would prefer to stop now and not skip other tournaments in other times.

Tennis waited for me for two years, and Australian Open can wait for me for another year. But I also know that it’s a very important tournament and that if it goes well, you can jump in the rankings and be okay for the rest of the season.”

Juan Martin said that he is also not sure if he will play the Davis Cup against Italy in Buenos Aires scheduled the 3rd of February.

“I will play where I feel well. Against Italy, we will play on clay, a surface where I struggle. However, we still didn’t decide what to do, when we will be calmer, we will plan the schedule as well as possible. In 2017, I want to be healthy and to know that I am calm because we won Davis Cup,”
