When Boris Becker joined Novak Djokovic’s team three years ago, many people were skeptical. Eventually, the partnership proved to be immensely good after Nole dominated the sport winning six slams (25 titles). Like everything in life, there is a start and an end and the end of this great partnership was announced yesterday.
When things got sideways
Things were great until Djokovic won the most coveted and tormented tournament in 2016: the Roland Garros. After winning the French Open, the Serb had problems with his motivation, and in the last part of the season, he asked the help of the controversial “spiritual guru” Pepe Imaz.
Djokovic had the idea of Imaz taking care of the mental part of the game while Becker had to take care of the technical part, but in tennis, you cannot split the two and probably Becker’s most significant contribution to Nole’s tennis was how to approach the game.
Paris
Djokovic coaches, Becker and Vajda, didn’t show up in Bercy in the Nole’s box (Pepe Imaz was there) to raise some doubts about the solidity of the team.
The ultimatum and the split
Eventually, Becker said to Djokovic that he had to choose between him and Imaz, and the Serb went for the guru. He might regret this choice.
Yesterday, both Becker ad Djokovic announced the split.
