Azarenka, Ivanovic, Wozniacki, Williams to the third round in Madrid – Mutua Madrilena

No upsets in the 4th day in Madrid for the WTA players

Azarenka – [Q] Hlavackova 6-3 7-6 (2)

A not so easy match for Vika against the world nr.117. It took 1h and 45m to win this match. Vika had some problems on her service to commit 8 double faults and she had some problems on her second service to win only 39% of the points.

Talking about the surface. “It is a little bit slippery but it’s the same for everybody,” Azarenka said “I don’t like to complain about the surface, it is what it is,”she added. “You have to deal with it and nobody’s going to change it now so everybody is playing in the same conditions.”

Ivanovic – Petrova 7-5 6-1

Ana was spotless against Nadia Petrova to win the match in 78 minutes. The Serbian beauty blasted 7 aces and was quite effective in saving break points (4 saved out of 5).

Ivanovic will play against Azarenka in the third round. Ana is leading 2-1 in the previous matches against Vika, but al three match were played some time ago, now it can be a different story.

Wozniacki – Barthel 6-4 7-6 (2)

It was a very tricky match for the former world nr.1. The German is playing really well. She had a very good tounament in Stuttgart and she had an easy win in the first round here with Goerges 6-4 6-1. Luckily (for the Dane), the German could not fully take advantage of her service (her most powerful weapon). She committed 6 double faults and she had a low 1st serve percentage (only 47% in).

Serena Williams – Pavlyuchenkova 6-2 6-1

Serena was as ruthless as ever against the Russian. It tool barely 1 hour to dismiss her in straight sets.  There was at least a category in between the two.

Serena will take on Wozniacki in the next round. Head to head is 3-1 for Serena, but Caroline won the most recent match in Miami (6-4 6-4)

 Sharapova – Zakopalova 6-4 6-3

It was not a difficult match for Maria to defeat the Czech in 67 minutes. Maria had some problems with the surface (like other players) to say  “I did feel a bit of a difference with the amount of clay that is on the court and the bounces were a bit off, especially the first couple of days of practice, but I feel like it’s got better and settled in a little bit,” she added “You just have to work on your balance a bit more,”

Maria will play Safarova in the next round. They played only once and the winner was Safarova in 2010 in Madrid 6-4 6-3 .. on a different clay court…
