ZAGREB. Stunning stuff in Croatia where Del Potro and Co. win the first Davis Cup for Argentina.
Things got quite tricky for the Latin American team after Cilic and Dodig won the doubles to clinch a 2-1 lead for Croatia. At that point, the only solution for Argentina was to win the last two singles. In both encounters, the Americans were the underdogs, but they have found the energy and the heart to win.
In the first match, Del Potro had an incredible comeback against Marin Cilic after he was two sets down. The Argentine found the solution in each set after breaking his opponent in the last possible game. Delpo won the match 6-7 (4) 2-6 7-5 6-4 6-3.
Surprisingly, the decisive single went smooth. The World no. 41 Federico Delbonis dismissed Ivo Karlovic (ranked no.20) 6-3 6-4 6-2 after breaking the Croat 4 times!

After the win, an emotional Del Potro commented
“This was an emotionally exhausting match and one of the biggest wins of my career. Thanks to all those who prevented me from retiring; I was very close to never playing again and, well, here I am.”

Federico played probably the best match of his life to comment “We played with our heart and tried to do the best. This is amazing.”

The Argentine captain was absolutely delighted for the win to say
“We did what we had to do. We could have lost, but the guys were amazing today. Juan Martin won an incredible match and Federico played the best match of his life. I dreamed for this so many times. I think tennis is very traditional at home and we deserve it.”
This was the 5th time that Argentina tried to win the trophy after failing in the finals in 1981, 2006, 2008, and 2011.
