15-year-old Cori “Coco” Gauff hit the headlines after reaching the second week in Wimbledon starting straight from the qualifications. The young American impressed not only for dispatching her childhood hero Venus Williams in straight sets (6-4 6-4), but also on how she handled the following match against Polona Hercon when she was inches from defeat before winning the match 3-6 7-6(7) 7-5.

The teenager has been training for long at the prestigious Mouratoglou Academy that is owned and managed by Patrick that is also Serena Williams’ coach. The Frenchman is a huge personality in the sport and he is well-known for being great in spotting talents from an early age. It’s not a coincidence that Stefanos Tsitsipas is training with him.

Why she is special

After Coco’s match against Polona Hercog, Patrick commented

“The thing that was amazing was when she was about to lose when she was just one game from losing, I suddenly saw a light go on in her and she was playing at a different level because she was refusing to lose.

And that is something that you see very rarely. You don’t see that very often. That was amazing, that refusal to lose allowed her to win, twice coming from match point down.”

CITI OPEN – 1st round

Coco is currently playing at the Citi Open where she qualified for the main draw after dismantling Maegan Masse 6-4 6-2 and Hiroko Kuwata 6-1 6-2. As Patrick said, the 15-year-old is already playing like a top20 player.
