Novak Djokovic’s run at the Madrid Open came to an unexpected end after a straight-set loss to Matteo Arnaldi. The Italian stunned the fourth seed with a 6-3, 6-4 victory, marking one of the biggest wins of his career. The defeat also extended Djokovic’s struggles on clay this season, as he has now lost three consecutive matches.
When asked whether this could have been his last match in Madrid, Djokovic responded with uncertainty. “It could be. It could be. I’m not sure if I will come back. So, I don’t know, I don’t know what to say. I mean, I’ll come back, maybe not as a player, of course. I hope it’s not, but it could be,” he admitted.
Djokovic, a three-time champion in Madrid, has struggled to find his rhythm this season. His loss to Arnaldi followed earlier defeats in Miami and Monte Carlo, signaling a challenging period for the Serbian star. Despite his recent struggles, he remains one of the most accomplished players in tennis history, with 24 Grand Slam titles to his name.
While Djokovic has not confirmed his plans for future appearances in Madrid, his comments suggest that his time competing at the event may be nearing its end. Whether he returns as a player or in another capacity, his legacy at the tournament is undeniable.
