Cori “Coco” Gauff is back to action this week after her triumphant run in Wimbledon where she was stopped only by the actual champion Simona Halep.
The 15-year-old impressed with her maturity and also how she dispatched her childhood idol Venus Williams in the 2nd round in straight sets (6-4 6-4).
How she handles the pressure
The teenager attracted an amazing amount of attention during the fortnight in Wimbledon, and it was amazing how she handled the pressure. The American is training at the Patrick Mouratoglou Academy, and during the Championships the Frenchman was very straightforward when he said that it was essential in Wimbledon for Coco not realizing how big she was to handle the pressure.
Mouratoglou’s opinion
Patrick commented:
“She is more mature than other 15-year-olds and that’s one of the keys to her success. But the thing that is most impressive is the way she handles the pressure. She’s had a great experience with pressure, which is quite unusual at 15.
She’s been in the spotlight since she was 10, she’s broken records for precocity with the things she’s done: youngest to reach the US Open Juniors Final and the youngest to qualify for a Grand Slam. She is someone that everyone expects to do well all the time already and you see how difficult it is for a professional player to handle that kind of pressure.”
My parents raised me well
However, Coco impressed for her maturity, and during a recent interview, she commented:
“I don’t really feel that much pressure. I just feel like myself. My parents raised me well. If I just be me, that will be fine. I’ve learned how to adapt to my life. I’ve gotten a lot of attention since that first match [in Wimbledon] and I’ve learned how to handle it.”
