Serena Williams plays the victim as she reflects on Jannik Sinner’s suspension and fairness in tennis: “I would have gotten 20 years”

Serena Williams And Jannik Sinner

Serena Williams has shared her thoughts on Jannik Sinner’s recent suspension, expressing both support for the young tennis star and concerns about fairness in the sport. Sinner, the men’s world number one, received a three-month ban after testing positive for clostebol, a banned substance, in 2024. The suspension followed an agreement with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), which had initially sought a longer ban.

Williams, who retired in 2022 after a legendary career, spoke candidly about the situation. “I love the guy, love this game. He’s great for the sport. I’ve been put down so much, I don’t want to bring anyone down. Men’s tennis needs him,” she said. However, she also highlighted the disparity in treatment, stating, “If I did that, I would have gotten 20 years. Let’s be honest. I would have gotten Grand Slams taken away from me.”

Reflecting on the broader implications, Williams drew parallels to Maria Sharapova’s doping case in 2016, where the former rival received a two-year ban, later reduced to 15 months. “Just weirdly and oddly, I can’t help but think about Maria all this time. I can’t help but feel for her,” Williams added, acknowledging the challenges faced by players in similar situations.

Her comments have sparked discussions about consistency and equity in the enforcement of doping regulations within tennis. As Sinner prepares to return to competition, the debate over fairness continues to resonate across the sport.
