Anastasia Potapova withdraws from Stuttgart WTA, Sabalenka advances to quarterfinals without playing a single match

Potapova Retires

Anastasia Potapova has withdrawn from the Stuttgart WTA tournament after securing a hard-fought victory against Clara Tauson in the first round. The Russian player cited a recurrence of an old injury as the reason for her decision, expressing disappointment but prioritizing her recovery ahead of upcoming tournaments.

Potapova shared her thoughts on social media, stating, “Very sad to announce that I’m not able to continue my run in Stuttgart. Last few days were very tough and unfortunately my old injury came up. I always loved to play here and happy with my yesterday’s win, but it is what it is…See you in 2026! I will make sure I’m ready and healthy for Madrid.”

As a result of Potapova’s withdrawal, World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka advances to the quarterfinals without playing a single match. This unexpected development gives Sabalenka additional rest and preparation time as she aims to secure the Stuttgart title. She is set to face the winner of the match between Elise Mertens and Diana Shnaider in the next round.
