Massimo Calvelli, the outgoing CEO of the ATP, has shared promising updates on the potential introduction of a Masters 1000 tournament in Saudi Arabia. Speaking about the ongoing negotiations, Calvelli described the discussions as progressing “very, very well,” signaling a strong commitment to expanding the ATP’s global reach.
“We’re very committed to the opportunity, and we think if we’re going to bring a top-tier event, a Masters 1000 event, the outlook is potentially from 2028,” Calvelli stated. He emphasized the significance of this initiative, which aligns with Saudi Arabia’s growing investment in international sports and entertainment.
Calvelli also highlighted the possibility of integrating the women’s side into the event, reflecting a broader vision for inclusivity and collaboration. “Even more so if we can couple that with bringing the women’s side, our women counterparts as well, right? That’s the other side of the equation,” he added.
This development marks a pivotal moment for tennis, as the ATP explores new markets and opportunities to engage diverse audiences. The proposed tournament could not only elevate the sport’s presence in the region but also contribute to Saudi Arabia’s ambitions of becoming a hub for high-profile global events.
