In a candid interview with Sky Sport, Jannik Sinner opened up about his decision to accept a three-month suspension proposed by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). The Italian tennis star, who tested positive for trace amounts of a banned substance in 2024, shared his perspective on the situation and the reasoning behind his choice.

Sinner explained that the positive test results were linked to contamination from an over-the-counter spray used by his physiotherapist to treat a minor injury. The spray, which contained the banned substance Clostebol, inadvertently led to the contamination during routine treatment sessions. Despite successfully arguing his case to an independent tribunal, Sinner ultimately agreed to the suspension to bring closure to the matter and focus on his career.

“It was a difficult decision, but I wanted to move forward and avoid further distractions,” Sinner stated. He emphasized that the suspension was not an admission of intentional wrongdoing but rather a step toward resolving the issue and maintaining his focus on the sport.

The suspension, which runs until May 4, 2025, allows Sinner to return in time for the French Open. While the situation has been challenging, the world No. 1 remains determined to learn from the experience and continue his journey in professional tennis. Fans and supporters have rallied behind him, recognizing his commitment to transparency and integrity throughout the process.

This is what Jannik said in this interview with Sky:

“Speaking honestly about how I experienced it, I felt very calm. The decision to go in the direction of accepting the three-month suspension happened very quickly. We agreed in a short time, even though I wasn’t entirely in agreement, and there was a bit of back-and-forth with my lawyer and the people around me.

In the end, you have to choose the lesser of two evils.

I was very fragile after what happened when I received the suspension in Doha during that month because things happened that I did not expect. Some of my reactions surprised me, and so several things unfolded.

I’d be lying if I said I’m a person without feelings or emotions. But in life, you learn. I believe that year after year, I get to know myself better, who I am as a person, and what my value is.

It wasn’t easy—in fact, it was very difficult at times—but the people around me lifted me up and gave me the strength to understand.”
