Gasquet wins the title in Antwerp

Richard Gasquet wins his 14th title in the inaugural tournament in Antwerp.

The Frenchman had a fantastic performance in Belgium where he dropped just 1 set during the entire week (vs. Edmund). In the final, the only awkward moment against Schwartzman was when Richard squandered three consecutive set points in the first set when he was leading 5-4 40-15 (on serve). Eventually, Gasquet lost the game, but he managed to win the opener at the breaker. Things got a bit easier in the second set when Gasquet clinched five consecutive games from a 1-all scoreline. The final result was 7-6 (3) 6-1.

It was very important winning the first set. GASQUET

Richard admitted that he was disappointed for wasting those set points to comment

“It was a tough match, especially in the first set when I was leading 5-4 40/0 on my serve. It was important for me to win the tie-break and I took a lot of confidence into the second set. It was a great match for me, and I was the favorite to win, so it’s important for me.

I’m very happy with the week. All the matches were tough, and there were a lot of great players here. It’s always nice to have a title.”

This is Richard’s 2nd title of the season after he Montpelier in February.
