Dominic Thiem in Hamburg

Dominic Thiem defeats Pablo Cuevas 6-3 7-63 in the 1st round in Hamburg on Tuesday after winning a tough battle. Thiem will play Marton Fucsovics in the 2nd round.

Score, report, and key facts

1st set.

Thiem conquered a commanding position in the outset to break Cuevas in the 2nd game (2-0) before consolidating his break and lead 3-0. That was enough for Thiem to win the set (6-3) since there were no other breaks.

2nd set.

Thiem came out strong at the beginning of the set after breaking Cuevas in the 1st game (1-0). Nevertheless, that wasn’t sufficient for the Austrian to win the set as the Uruguayan found the way to break back in the 2nd (1-1) game. Dominic maintained his focus before winning the set at the tiebreak at 3.

At the end of the match, Thiem scored 75 points vs. the Uruguayan’s 66 points.

The Austrian won this match even if he was not so effective in converting his break points as he converted only 22% (2/9). On the other side, Pablo was battling in converting his break points because he converted only 33% of his break points (1/3). That was one of the key issues for his demise.

After this contest, the head to head between Thiem and Cuevas is 5-2 for Dominic.

Thiem’s Interview

After the match, Dominic commented: “I wish that the grass court season would have been longer. I also love this surface, but it was only one match unfortunately. So, I hope that I can do it better next year. I’m back on clay for two weeks and the two last weeks of the year, so I’ll try to enjoy them as much as possible.”
