Pegula compares Eala to Leylah Fernandez

Eala And Leylah Fernandez

Jessica Pegula, currently competing in the Miami Open, has shared her thoughts on Alexandra Eala, the rising star from the Philippines. After their intense semifinal match, Pegula praised Eala’s playing style, likening her to Leylah Fernandez, the Canadian tennis sensation.

Pegula highlighted Eala’s ability to take the ball early, her strategic use of angles, and her sharp court vision. She said: “She’s just a really good player. She reminds me of a Leylah Fernandez. Takes the ball super early, uses the angles really well. Uses the down the line forehand really well. She competes and sees the court well. She definitely takes the ball early, anticipates well, looks to move in. So all these things are going to take her far. The serve is so tough. On these courts, it stays really low and it’s really slow. But, it stays low, and it’s hard to kind of commit to what you want to do. I was struggling kind of whether I want to step in, but then I didn’t want to give her free points. I think next time I would definitely start off way more aggressive now that I have a sense of how she plays.”

Pegula remarked, emphasizing the similarities in their aggressive and intelligent approach to the game. Eala’s performance throughout the tournament, including victories over top-ranked players, has solidified her reputation as a formidable competitor.

The comparison to Fernandez, who has already made waves on the WTA Tour, underscores Eala’s potential to achieve great success in her career. Fans and analysts alike are eager to see how Eala continues to develop and whether she can follow in Fernandez’s footsteps on the global stage.
